At room temperature, DMA18 exists as a white waxy solid or a colorless to slightly yellow paste; at higher temperatures (e.g., in summer), it transforms into a light brown viscous liquid with a faint amine odor. It is insoluble in water but readily soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, isopropanol, benzene and chloroform. The tertiary amine group (-N(CH3)2) in its molecular structure enables it to react with alkylating agents including methyl chloride, benzyl chloride and ethylene oxide, yielding various cationic quaternary ammonium salt surfactants such as octadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (1831) and octadecyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride (1827). It can also be used in the synthesis of products like antistatic agent SN. The long carbon chain (C18) structure of DMA18endows its downstream derivatives with excellent softening, antistatic and emulsifying properties.




Application

 

DMA18 serves as a core intermediate for the production of various high-performance surfactants, boasting highly focused and critical applications.

For instance, it reacts with methyl chloride to produce octadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (1831), and with benzyl chloride to form octadecyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride (1827). These derivatives are mainly used as conditioning agents in hair conditioners, fabric softeners, antistatic agents and bactericidal disinfectants. They also act as modifiers for organic bentonite.


In addition, DMA18 can be used in the synthesis of rubber accelerators.




Safety and Storage

 

From a safety perspective, DMA18is irritating and corrosive to the skin and eyes, and contact may cause burns. Strict personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn during handling to avoid direct contact.

In case of skin or eyes contact, immediately rinse with plenty of water for at least 30 minutes and seek medical assistance.

Stored in a sealed container in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area, away from sources of ignition, heat, and oxidizing agents.Store separately from incompatible substances such as acids.
