Under normal temperature and pressure, DMA14is a colorless, transparent oily liquid with a characteristic amine odor. It is insoluble in water but readily soluble in most organic solvents. The tertiary amine group (-N(CH3)2) in its molecular structure determines its reactivity with alkylating agents such as methyl chloride and benzyl chloride, enabling the formation of various cationic quaternary ammonium salt surfactants (e.g., 1427, 1431). It can react with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to produce tetradecyl dimethyl amine oxide (OB-4), and with sodium chloroacetate to yield tetradecyl dimethyl betaine (BS-14). These downstream products exhibit excellent surface activity, emulsifying properties and moderate foaming characteristics. In addition, DMA14 is derived from abundant raw materials, primarily natural coconut oil or palm kernel oil, which are renewable resources with relatively stable costs.




Application

 

It can be used to produce various types of surfactants.

Cationic surfactants: For example, it reacts with benzyl chloride to form tetradecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (1427), which is used as a bactericide and disinfectant. It can also be used to prepare tetradecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (1431) and other compounds, which serve as fabric softeners and antistatic agents.

Amphoteric surfactants: It reacts with reagents such as sodium chloroacetate to produce tetradecyl dimethyl betaine (BS-14). These products feature low irritation and are commonly applied in fields like daily chemical industry and detergent industry.

Amine oxides: It reacts with hydrogen peroxide to generate tetradecyl dimethyl amine oxide (OB-4), which is mainly used as a foaming agent and foam stabilizer in the detergent industry and other sectors.


Other applications: It can also be used as a preservative, fuel additive, rare metal extractant, pigment dispersant, mineral flotation agent, and cosmetic raw material, among others.




Safety and Storage

 

From a safety perspective, DMA14is irritating and corrosive to the skin and eyes, and contact may cause burns. Strict personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn during handling to avoid direct contact.

In case of skin or eyes contact, immediately rinse with plenty of water for at least 30 minutes and seek medical assistance.

Stored in a sealed container in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area, away from sources of ignition, heat, and oxidizing agents.Store separately from incompatible substances such as acids.
