Under ambient temperature and pressure, DMA12 is a colorless and transparent oily liquid. It is poorly soluble in water, but miscible with most organic solvents including ethanol, diethyl ether, acetone and benzene. The tertiary amine group in its molecule endows it with weak basicity, enabling it to react with alkylating agents such as methyl chloride, benzyl chloride and dimethyl sulfate to produce various cationic quaternary ammonium salt surfactants. It can react with hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) to form dodecyldimethylamine oxide, a mild amphoteric surfactant. Additionally, it is capable of reacting with reagents like sodium chloroacetate to generate dodecyl betaine. Furthermore, DMA12 will react violently with strong oxidants and strong acids.

Application

Cationic Surfactants:Examples include 1227 (benzalkonium chloride), a broad-spectrum and highly efficient bactericidal disinfectant. It is widely used for disinfection in hospitals, restaurants and swimming pools, as well as a bactericidal algaecide and slime stripper in industrial water treatment. 1231 (dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride) can also serve as a fabric softener, antistatic agent and pigment dispersant.

Zwitterionic Surfactants:A typical example is dodecyl betaine (BS-12), which boasts excellent mildness, thickening properties and foam stability. It is a key ingredient in high-end personal care products such as shampoos, body washes and facial cleansers.

Dodecyldimethylamine oxide (OA-12) is mild, low-irritating, and produces fine and stable foam. It acts as an outstanding foaming and foam-stabilizing agent in products like dish detergents, shampoos and body washes.

Other Applications:In the lubricating oil industry, these surfactants are used as lubricating rust inhibitors. In the textile industry, they function as softeners. In the plastics industry, they serve as antistatic agents.

Safety and Storage

From a safety perspective, DMA12 is irritating and corrosive to the skin and eyes, and contact may cause burns. Strict personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn during handling to avoid direct contact.

In case of skin or eyes contact, immediately rinse with plenty of water for at least 30 minutes and seek medical assistance.

Stored in a sealed container in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area, away from sources of ignition, heat, and oxidizing agents.Store separately from incompatible substances such as acids.
