Product Features

 

The key features of TMEDA are mainly determined by the two tertiary amino groups in its molecule. It exhibits high chemical stability but is highly flammable and volatile, requiring careful handling.




Application

 

Polymer Chemistry: TMEDA serves as a catalyst for the gel polymerization of acrylamide, acrylic acid and other monomers. This is its most well-known application in biochemical laboratories. TMEDA forms a redox initiation system with ammonium persulfate, which can generate free radicals at room temperature to initiate monomer polymerization.

Organometallic Chemistry:Core application. TMEDA acts as a ligand to form stable complexes (e.g., BuLi·TMEDA) with organolithium reagents such as n-butyllithium (n-BuLi). This enhances the reactivity and selectivity of organolithium reagents, making them widely used in reactions such as directed alkylation and polymerization.

Organic Synthesis:TMEDA functions as a strong base or catalyst in various organic reactions, such as aldol condensation and dehydrohalogenation.

Other Applications:TMEDA is used as a polyurethane catalyst, epoxy resin curing accelerator, and a starting material for the synthesis of other special chemicals.




Safety and Storage

 

From a safety perspective, it has an extremely low flash point, is highly flammable and corrosive, posing fire and explosion hazards. Inhalation of its vapors can cause severe irritation to the respiratory tract, so it must be operated in a fume hood. If handling outside the fume hood is necessary, appropriate gas masks must be worn.

In case of skin contact, immediately rinse with plenty of water for at least 30 minutes and seek medical assistance.

Store in a cool, well-ventilated place, away from fire and heat sources. Keep container tightly sealed. Store separately from strong oxidizers and acids.
