The key feature of DMAPA is its bifunctional nature, combining the reactivity of a primary amine with the catalytic properties of a tertiary amine in a single molecule.
It is a versatile intermediate with high solubility and is classified as a corrosive and flammable liquid, requiring careful handling.
Application
Surfactants & Cosmetics: Key intermediate for synthesizing amphoteric surfactants (e.g., cocamidopropyl betaine) used in shampoos, bath products, and other cosmetics.
Epoxy Resins: Serves as both a curing agent and a catalyst for epoxy resins in laminates, castings, and adhesives.
Industrial Applications: Used in producing dyes, ion-exchange resins, textile/leather treatment agents, asphalt anti-stripping agents, and as an additive in cyanide-free electroplating.
Safety and Storage
From a safety perspective, its high flammability and corrosivity are the most critical hazards to manage. Furthermore, its ability to cause sensitization upon skin contact necessitates strict personal protective equipment (PPE) during handling.
In case of skin contact, immediately rinse with plenty of water for at least 30 minutes and seek medical assistance.
Store in a cool, well-ventilated place, away from fire and heat sources. Keep container tightly sealed. Store separately from strong oxidizers and acids.
